Northern Cyprus has often been described as the "Mediterranean of your childhood" and that phrase sums up the peace, serenity and sheer natural beauty of this almost forgotten backwater of the Levant.
Whilst most of the Mediterranean has succumbed to the excesses of mass tourism, north Cyprus is one of the few places where tourism fits in with the environment, rather than the other way round. With less than one tenth of the visitors that swarm to the southern resorts like Paphos, in northern Cyprus the locals still outnumber the visitors and the north is considered not only the most beautiful part of the island but one of the bet of all Mediterranean resorts.
The geography means you can spend the morning by the sea indulging your tan, take lunch in a mountain-top taverna enjoying the spectacular views and then spend the afternoon exploring some of the most incredible historical sites the whole Mediterranean region has to offer. The possibilities are endless.
The main influences on their cuisine come from Turkey, Greece, Armenia, Lebanon & Syria. Traditionally, the people produce almost everything they need themselves.
It may come as a surprise but amongst all of this serenity and natural beauty, northern Cyprus can have a more lively side. Kyrenia has over 300 restaurants and tavernas and the island offers many activities, including golf, horse riding, go-karting, paragliding, quad biking and a full range of water sports.
The beaches of northern Cyprus are among the cleanest and safest in the Mediterranean. The average water temperature is 24C between May and October. During the summer season the busier beaches offer an excellent service in terms of eating and drinking facilities. Some of these beaches will also offer water activities. On the quieter beaches you can find small bars and tavernas. On the small secluded bays you can sit for days and never see a soul!
